General or Academic IELTS Test?

IThere are two types of tests preferred by many globally, and they would be the IELTS Academic and General.

Two types of IELTS test to choose from?

The IELTS Academic are preferred by nurses and doctors, including medical auxiliaries who are trying to secure work in the UK. Similarly, there are certain job associations or industry boards that recommend that their professionals do the IELTS Academic. Decent scores are expected for this exam, especially 6.5, 7.0 and 7.5 are common bands.

For those going to University, for a Foundation degree, Certificate, Diploma or Undergraduate studies, the international office for those universities will normally ask for an IELTS Academic of at least 6.5, but there are some universities which accept even 5.5. IELTS Academic is an alternative for GMAT, TOEFL, SELT, Pearson PTE Academic, and some also accept Duolingo.

For those opting for IELTS General, that would be more for migration purposes rather than the above. Governments across the world normally wish to test the people who are coming to their shores based on their level of English competencies, some also do that in French, for example TEF or TCF for Canada.

IELTS General is a very common requirement for any country to accept you as a temporary migrant, skilled worker, high value migrant or even as a person who is coming for permanent residency. A decent score of 6.5 is widely accepted worldwide, and securing a better band, makes your application more trustworthy and it even looks stronger whilst you are submitting your paperwork or whilst speaking to immigration.

IELTS General is the most popular for those who wish to become economic migrants, go where the grass is greener, secure lucrative job opportunities and to live a better lifestyle than in their home country. Again, similar to IELTS Academic, this is no child’s play, and one should get prepped, get some sort of training or even some coaching to be able to achieve the right band to move abroad and do next steps.

No choice for opting for computer-based or paper-based exams!

Even if you have a personal preference for paper-based exams, you cannot sit for one as they have phased it out. You have to feel like you can use the computer better; a pen and blank paper will still be given to have more control over the exams. To note that there are more exam dates since IELTS exams have become fully computer-based, and students have to adapt to it.
